In July of 2006, a demonstration took place outside
the City Hall of Pompano Beach, Florida, protesting
the fact that the City Commission changed the city's
zoning restrictions in order to allow for the building
of a 29,000 square foot mosque in the northwest
section of Pompano.
The protesters had a number of concerns:
-
The
planned mosque, one of an ethnically Arabic variety, is to be built in a predominantly black Christian
part of town, giving rise to the thinking that
the mosque's goal is to target black youth for
conversion.
-
The
land which the planned mosque is to be built
upon, prior to the zoning change, was alotted
specifically for needed low cost housing.
-
The Islamic center from
which the planned mosque had originated was found to have had various ties to
militant organizations. As well, the imam of the center had made numerous hateful statements aimed at Jews.
STOP
THE MOSQUE (STM) was spearheaded by a group of concerned
individuals who believe that radical mosques or Islamic
centers, such as the aforementioned, do not belong
in American neighborhoods. STM will use all legal means necessary to
prohibit these types of institutions from being built.
